Gilman School is a private all-boys school located in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Founded in 1897 as the Country School for Boys, it was the first country day school in the United States. It has continuously been an all-boys school (presently grades pre-first to 12, with kindergarten beginning in the fall of 2009), although now, it holds classes with the two adjacent all-girls schools: Roland Park Country School and Bryn Mawr School. Gilman is widely regarded as one of the best and most prestigious schools in Maryland. Its graduates are noted for being intensely loyal to the institution and other alumni. As an example, approximately 80% of the School's Board of Trustees are graduates of the School. This is one of the highest percentages of any school in the United States.

History

Gilman was founded as The Country School for Boys by Baltimorean Anne Galbraith Carey, with assistance from Daniel Coit Gilman (the first president of Johns Hopkins University). The school opened its doors on September 30, 1897, in the Homewood mansion on the Johns Hopkins campus. In 1910, the Country School moved to its current 68-acre (275,000 m²) campus in Roland Park and changed its name to The Gilman Country School for Boys. In 1951 "Country" was dropped.

Gilman has two "sister" schools: Roland Park Country School, across Roland Avenue from Gilman on the west side, and Bryn Mawr School, across Northern Parkway from Gilman on the north side. All three schools coordinate some Upper School (grades 9-12) classes to the extent that some classes have students from all three schools. Bridges connect the Gilman campus to the two girls' schools.

Lumen Center

Gilman School dedicated its new academic center, The Lumen Center, Sept. 27 at a special reception honoring leadership donors to its recently-completed $50 million campaign Character ∙ Leadership ∙ Commitment: The Campaign for Gilman School.

The Lumen Center takes its name from the Latin phrase "In Tuo Lumine Lumen," Gilman's motto, located on the school seal for more than 100 years. The phrase is literally translated as "in thy light we shall see light."

Jonathon S. Jacobson '79, national chair of Character ∙ Leadership ∙ Commitment, and his wife Joanna, supported the campaign with a $5 million challenge gift to the Board of Trustees. That gift eventually helped to raise $20 million toward the campaign.

In recognition of their generosity, the Jacobsons were asked to name the new academic center, and they chose a name that reflects Mr. Jacobson's affection for his alma mater.

"I wanted the name of the center to reflect important aspects of Gilman and what it meant for me, both as a student and now as an alumnus and Trustee," says Jacobson. "I thought about the school motto: 'In Tuo Lumine Lumen,' and I realized that Gilman has been a clear and consistent light for how to live my life.

"Gilman has truly been a beacon of light that has guided me throughout my life, and I wanted the name to reflect that."

Jacobson is the founder of Boston-based Highfields Capital Management, L.P. The gift, made through the Jacobson Family Foundation, is the second-largest single donation in Gilman School history.

The Lumen Center, designed by Ziger/Snead Architects, expands the capacity of Carey Hall, Gilman's historic Upper School building that reopened in December 2007 after extensive renovation. The two buildings are connected via a hallway on the terrace (middle) level of the three-floor Lumen Center structure.

The centerpiece of The Lumen Center is a new dining area on the terrace level, which seats more than 400 and feeds all students in grades 2-12 as well as faculty and staff each school day.

An art gallery and sports gallery will surround the dining hall space, giving student and faculty artwork as well as Gilman's athletic tradition a central place in the daily life of the school.

A new health center is located just outside the entrance to the dining area, and the terrace level also features an impressive lecture hall for classes and special events.

On its first floor (upper level), The Lumen Center has nine large, flexible technologically-capable classrooms, including a wing dedicated to the Modern Languages department. Gilman's Alumni and Development Office also has office space on the upper level.

The lower level of the building houses the school bookstore as well as a pair of classrooms for design and woodworking.

In addition to the naming of the building, plaques recognize several other named spaces in the new facility.

Construction of The Lumen Center, by Henry H. Lewis Contractors, Inc., began in 2006 and was completed this past summer.

The Lumen Center construction was a key priority of Character · Leadership · Commitment: The Campaign for Gilman School. This $50 fund-raising million effort, which closed on June 30, 2008, raised a total of $52.1 million for this building as well as the renovation of campus centerpiece Carey Hall, to support scholarships and faculty professional development and to grow the School's annual giving program.

Mission

Gilman School is a diverse community dedicated to educating boys in mind, body, and spirit through particular emphasis upon academic excellence, athletic participation and aesthetic appreciation. Gilman seeks to produce men of character and integrity who have the skills and ability to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work.

Academics

Gilman School has a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. In addition, the school has a comprehensive honor system, a community service program, an assembly program, and many leadership opportunities.

Athletics

Gilman is well-known locally, regionally and nationally for its tradition of athletic success. Since the year 2000, 11 Gilman varsity teams have won at least one conference championship. Overall, the school sponsors 16 sports;: most teams have varsity and JV programs, while some have fresh-soph and/or middle school squads.

Nationally, Gilman is perhaps best-known for its success in football and lacrosse. The football team has won eight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) "A" Conference championships in 10 seasons under head coach Francis "Biff" Poggi (Gilman Class of 1979). The 2005 team was ranked 12th in the nation in USA Today's Super 25 high school football poll after going undefeated.

The lacrosse team, led by coach Brooks Matthews (Gilman Class of 1987), was ranked #1 in the country by LaxPower at the conclusion of the 2008 season. The team has captured a remarkable 14 conference titles in MIAA (formerly the Maryland Scholastic Association (MSA)) competition, regularly ranking in the top 25 in the country and sending graduates to top collegiate lacrosse programs.

During the 2005-06 school year, five Gilman varsity squads (football, golf, ice hockey, tennis & track & field) won conference titles.

Gilman's biggest rival is the McDonogh School, located in suburban Owings Mills. A football game between the two schools has taken place every fall since 1914.
