1981 album,Abacab . Clocking at seven and a half minutes, it is the longest song on the album, only a little longer than the title track. While the rest of the album maintains a pop-oriented feel, Dodo is very dark and nihilistic in its lyrics. The lyrics discuss the human tendency to destroy or exploit his environment, especially what he finds repulsive or useful. Take for example these lyrics:
The song is heavily laden with synthesizers and drums. The song's rhythm includes elements of funk and reggae, genres which Genesis had rarely explored at the time.
The track was regularly performed on the
Abacab tour in 1981, theThree Sides Live tour in 1982 and was the opening song on the Mama Tour in 1983/84.This song is also included on the live album
Three Sides Live , along with "Abacab" and "Me and Sarah Jane ", which are also from the Abacab album.
