- Indo-Gibraltarians
The Indo-Gibraltarians are the present-day inhabitants of
Gibraltar who are ofIndia n descent. The Indian community began to make their mark on Gibraltarian society in the late 1800s and have continued ever since. Three Sindhis arrived in the early 1890s,Messrs Pohoomull ,Chanrai andChellaram . Four others followed in quick succession and together became the founder members of the 600 strongHindu community in Gibraltar today. Most of the community trace their ancestry to theSind province of pre-partitionIndia .Majority of the Indians have set up shops selling electronics, fine china, clothes, high quality watches and jewellery. Others set up
Indian restaurant s,takeaway s andsweet shops . Over time the younger generation, after completing theircomprehensive school and university education, have moved away from shop-keeping and into the professional world. There are a number of lawyers, accountants and civil servants as well as a Gibraltarian Hindu Speaker of the House —Haresh Budhrani QC.The Indian community is well-integrated socially, maintain their religious practices amid an increasingly secular life. They run a temple just off Engineer's Lane and the Radhasoami Satsung Beas. Some are members of the
Casino Calpe and others frequent the St Bernard’s club in the Community Centre on Zoca Flank.References
