The Universal Pronouncing Gazetteer written in the English language is one of the earliest gazetteers in the world and most certainly in the United States of America.Fact|date=January 2008 This book is not precious only for containing within its pages an alphabetical list of the most of the known cities, countries, ports, counties and a long etcetera, but also, the population of those places at the time when this book was printed. All that makes this one volume book a most valuable document for the historian specialist and amateur.Fact|date=January 2008

There have been different editions of this book since the early years of the 19th century though it’s possible to consider the Sixth Edition, printed in Philadelphia, by Lidsay and Blackiston in 1847 with circa 650 pages, to be the most complete of the all of them.
