- Technophile
A term coined by Neil Postman in his 1993 work: "Technopoly". A technophile is best described as someone with a utopian outlook regarding technology. They see only the good that technological changes will make, and fail to see the ill-effects that may occur due to technological change.
"... [Those] who see only what new technologies can do and are incapable of imagining what they will "undo". We might call such people Technophiles. They gaze on technology as a lover does on his beloved, seeing it as without blemish and entertaining no apprehension for the future." [Postman, Neil (1993). "Technopoly", p. 5, Vintage Books, New York ]
Of technological advances, Postman suggests that in response to Freud's remark that inventions are but improved means to an unimproved end, the technophile would argue that:
"... [L] ife has always been barren of joys and full of misery but that the telephone, ocean liners, and especially the reign of hygiene have not only lengthened life but made it a more agreeable proposition" [Postman, Neil (1993). "Technopoly", p. 6-7, Vintage Books, New York ] .
