- London FrightFest Film Festival
Fright Fest is an annual film festival held in central
London over theAugust Bank Holiday weekend. The first event was held in the year2000 .As its name indicates the primary focus is on the horror genre. However it has included a wide variety of movies that blur the boundaries of genre definitions.
History
For four years it was held at the
Prince Charles Cinema (PCC). In 2005 it moved to theOdeon West End (OWE) due to increasing audiences. Various one-off events have been held at venues across the UK. The Fright Fest brand has been included in theCambridge Film Festival and theGlasgow Film Festival .The festival was envisioned by producer Paul McEvoy and is run by himself, distributor Ian Rattray, noted genre critic Alan Jones [http://www.alanj.dircon.co.uk/biography.htm] and publicist Greg Day [http://www.gregdaypr.co.uk/] . They are a visible force throughout the weekend and eager for feedback. Films are introduced on stage by a varying combination of the organisers. Question and Answer sessions are also compered by them.
The Festival has been host to many personal appearances by those involved with the making of the films being shown. Notable attendees include
George Romero ,Rob Zombie [http://film.guardian.co.uk/interview/interviewpages/0,,1045026,00.html] ,Paul W. S. Anderson ,Park Chan-Wook ,Danny Boyle ,Guillermo Del Toro (twice),Brian Yuzna ,Neil Marshall The League of Gentlemen , andUwe Boll .Fright Fest also accepts short film submissions. The criteria is that the films be no longer than 15 minutes in length, yet exceptions have been made. Submissions to the festival are free [http://www.frightfest.co.uk/submissions.html] .Scheduling of the shorts has varied between being attached to a feature film or being shown in a continuous block.
FrightFest has had a number of different sponsors over the span of its' life including
Film 4 , Volkswagen Lupo, Bizarre Magazine (of which the August issue is given away free), Xfm andZone Horror .Poster designs have been provided by the artist Graham Humphrys.
Merchandise is sold on site via a stall run by
