Gora Kabristan, Lahore

The Gora Kabristan in Lahore, Pakistan is the city's only operational Christian cemetery. It is also know as the Jail Road Cemetery.

Location

It is located on Jail Road next to the Lahore Gymkhana.

History

This cemetery was the last one to be started under the British in the 1920s.

Famous individuals

Some famous individuals lie buried here. These include Dr. A.C. Woolner, the vice-chancellor of the University of Punjab (1928 - 1936), Pakistan's Chief Justice A.R. Cornelius and Princess Bamba Sophia Jindan Daleep Singh, the eldest daughter of Maharaja Daleep Singh, the last ruler of Punjab until annexation by the British in 1849. Princess Bamba, who married an Australian-born medical doctor and died childless, always described herself until death in March 1957 as the "Queen of the Punjab" and claimant to the title, even after the cartogrphic vivisection of the Indian subcontinent had carved out two independent nation-states, India and Pakistan.
