Weller was playing for Capital District Selects of the Eastern Junior Hockey League when drafted. He was drafted in the third round, 77th overall by the
Ottawa Senators in the2004 NHL Entry Draft . The pick had been received in a trade with theMontreal Canadiens forRadek Bonk .After being drafted, Weller enrolled in
Clarkson University , playing three seasons. In 2006-07, he was Clarkson's leading scorer with 41 points, including a team-high 19 goals. Shawn Weller auctioned away one of his Binghamton Sentors hockey sticks, signed by the entire team at the 2008 South High Marathon Dance. All the money gained from the 28 hour dance went to charities. The dance overall made more than $245,000.
