American Civil War , in the "wilderness of eastern Nevada." It protected the overland mail coaches andPony Express , which linked California to the Union. It was operated 1862 to 1869.It was located at the east entrance to the
Overland Pass fromRuby Valley , near Hobson on the west side ofRuby Lake .It was declared a
National Historic Landmark in 1961.citation|title=PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Text/66000460.pdf National Survey of Historic Sites and Buildings: Fort Ruby] |474 KB|date=July 14, 1966 |author=Charles W. Also, since the "log structures were in poor condition when this site was designated as a Landmark, and they have been altered and deteriorated significantly since designation," continued landmark status is under review.
