- Ouagadougou Cathedral
-
Ouagadougou Cathedral or Cathédrale-Ouagadougou is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ouagadougou in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, titled Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. It was built in the 1930s and is one of the largest cathedrals in the western-southern African countries [1].
The building material is mudbrick, traditional in the region. The architecture is reminiscent of a European romanesque basilica, but intentionally[citation needed] evokes the impression of incompleteness. The basilica shape is realised only in two basic levels so that the edifice resembles a manor house or mansion, though covering wide area. Especially noticeable are the two steeples of different height, feignedly unfinished and lacking any spire.
