The paper was founded in 1929. The newspaper’s slogan is, “If you don’t want it printed…don’t let it happen." It is a free tabloid-sized newspaper published every Wednesday while classes are in session, with the exception of the week before finals. The newspaper is the recipient of a "Best of Show" award presented February 2008, by the Associated Collegiate Press.[1]

Mission
The mission of the Merciad as the official student newspaper of Mercyhurst College since 1929, is to be a reliable source of information for the entire college community. It is to represent, and more importantly, encourage the free expression of ideas essential to an informed academic community. The Merciad is dedicated to gathering college news and distributing a wide array of college information and ideas that are diverse in content, varied in format and rich in viewpoint. It has as its objective to inform, enlighten and promote literacy, while reflecting the multicultural character of the student body. Essential to this mission is an active student advocacy. The Merciad staff, like the college in general, strives to promote the qualities of excellence and creativity in its service to others. The student publication upholds truth, human dignity and the values of its parent institution Catholic in nature and Mercy in tradition as its guiding principles.[2]
