Anti-Cruelty Society

Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago exists to prevent cruelty to animals and to advance humane education.

The Anti-Cruelty Society (SPCA of Illinois) is a private, not-for-profit humane society and does not receive government assistance. It is one of the largest such organizations in the United States. It was founded in 1899 and has been in the River North neighborhood of Chicago for many years.

In 2004, ACS arranged the adoption of 6537 animals into loving and caring environments. It decided in 2005 to only accept animals from their guardians, ensuring that all strays will go to the city-funded program Animal Care and Control.

Only 6 to 8 % of lost pets in Chicago are ever reunited with their families.

The society's President, Gene Mueller, resigned early 2008.A replacement is yet to be announced.
