San Francisco Institute of Architecture

The San Francisco Institute of Architecture (SFIA) was founded in 1991 by Fred A. Stitt.

Overview

SFIA was founded in 1992 by Fred A. Stitt as a school devoted to innovation in design and experimental research and reform in architectural education. The school was co founded by Lou Marines, recent CEO of the national American Institute of Architects. A year later Marines separated from SFIA to pursue continuing education professional developmentprograms.

DEGREE PROGRAMS

SFIA is a graduate school offering a two-year Master of Architecture program for those with an undergraduate degree in architecture and a three-year (or longer) program for those with little or no previous architectural education.

SFIA offers a Master degree program in Architecture and Ecological design. Graduates of four-year architecture programs and who have experience working in design, construction, or related professions will qualify for this degree program. Licensed architects qualify. Licensed engineers may qualify, depending onexperience and areas of specialization.

We encourage working students who want to complete their degrees through part-time study. Most classes are scheduled for evenings or Saturdays.

Graduates of SFIA have gone on to teach at other schools, become licensed architects, and enter the profession in a variety of roles from contractors and developers to green building consultants and administrators to such agencies as the San Francisco Department of the Environment.

History

In 2004 SFIA began to offer distance learning courses for students around the world.

In October 2007 SFIA relocated to Berkeley, California. Fred plans to establish SFIA programs in other cities. Since other architecture schools are slow to adapt and adopt green building into their curricula, SFIA will provide alternative education that is much desired by students and the profession at large.
