Lucius (Frederick Moses Bottomley) Smith was the inaugural Bishop of Knaresborough from 1905 to 1934. Born on 6 January 1860 into a clerical family [His father was the Reverend Frederick Smith, Vicar of Shelf] he was educated at Harrow [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] and Balliol College, Oxford [ [http://rpo.library.utoronto.ca/poem/2735.html Undergraduate at Balliol] ] . In 1882 he studied for ordination at "Leeds Clergy School" before a curacy in Toxteth [During which time he married Lucy Bottomley] . He was successively Vicar of Ilkley, Richmond, Easby, Calverley and Macclesfield before a 29 year stint as Suffragan Bishop of Knaresborough [The Times, Thursday, Nov 22, 1905; pg. 14; Issue 38184; col A Ecclesiastical Intelligence] .
