refnum=80002920Huff Archeological Site, also known as Huff State Historic Site, is a former fortified village of the
Mandan , currently on the bank ofLake Oahe in North Dakota. The fortifications are primarily a rectangular moat and earthen wall, with bastions. The site has been owned by the state of North Dakota since 1910. The site has been fenced, signed, and open to the public.
As an
archaeological site , it has yielded and is expected to yield knowledge about the prehistory in whichMandan culture developed. Although already excavated in parts, and partially eroded by Lake Oahe, other parts of the site have high integrity and potential. It was declared a
National Historic Landmark in 1997.citation|title=PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Text/80002920.pdf National Historic Landmark Nomination: Huff Archeological Site / 32MO11] |192 KB|date=April 30, 1994 |author=R.
