Beccles inSuffolk . The station is on theIpswich -Lowestoft East Suffolk Line .The East Suffolk Railway, opened in 1859, connecting Beccles to Ipswich, and incorporating parts of the Halesworth, Beccles and Haddiscoe Railway, and the Lowestoft and Beccles Railway. The Waveney Valley Railway from Tivetshall on the Ipswich to Norwich mainline reached Beccles in 1863, making the town an important junction on the expanding [http://www.gersociety.org.uk/ Great Eastern Railway ] network.
The
Waveney Valley Line closed to passengers in 1954 (lingering on for freight until 1963), together with the line to Haddiscoe north across the River Waveney which closed to passengers in 1959. The engine shed was demolished in 2006, and the island platform is since overgrown. There are traces of the turntable in the ground. There are plans to restore the island platform at Beccles. This is part of a long-term plan by
Network Rail to increase capacity on the line by either creating a further double-track section or installing a passing loop. The restoration of the former mainline from Beccles to Haddiscoe Station has been considered. The station is served by
National Express East Anglia , who operate services between Ipswich and Lowestoft. All services are operated bydiesel multiple unit s of Classes 153, 156, 170.ervice
There is generally a two hourly service from Beccles to Lowestoft eastbound and to Ipswich westbound, with some services continuing onwards to
London Liverpool Street using new Turbostar units.External links
