Wheelock Academy was the model academy for the five civilized tribes' academies. It was started as a missionary school for Choctaw girls, and is still owned by the Choctaw nation.

It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965.citation|title=PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Text/66000949.pdf National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination: Wheelock Academy] |261 KB|date= |author=Joseph Scott Mendinghall |publisher=National Park Service]
