- Camelion class sloop
The "Camelion" class was a
Royal Navy class of screw-drivensloop s of wood construction, designed by Isaac Watts. Eight ships of the class were built from 1858 – 1866 with another eight cancelled. They were initially rated as Second Class sloops, but were later reclassified as corvettes. Their displacement was 1,365 tons with 200 hp. They were capable of approximately 9 knots and were armed with 17 guns.Ships

The first two vessels were ordered on
3 April 1854 , although neither was laid down for several years. Another three were ordered on1 April 1857 and a further three on27 March 1858 .*, built by
Deptford Royal Dockyard , laid down8 November 1858 , launched23 February 1860 and completed30 July 1861 . Sold for breaking up 1883.
*, built byPembroke Royal Dockyard , laid down16 June 1859 , launched19 July 1860 and completed25 September 1861 . Sold in February 1867 as mercantile "Hawk", then resold to thePortuguese Navy and renamed "Infanta Dom Henrique".
*, built byPortsmouth Royal Dockyard , laid down1 March 1858 , launched26 March 1860 and completed8 June 1861 . Sold for breaking up April 1884.

Four further ships of this class were ordered from the
Royal Dockyard s on5 March 1860 and another four on25 March 1861 . The first four comprised "Harlequin" atPortsmouth (laid down13 February 1861 ), "Tees" atChatham (laid down February 1861), "Sappho" atDeptford (laid down1 May 1861 ) and "Trent" atPembroke (laid down3 September 1861 ). The last four comprised "Circassian" atDeptford (laid down5 May 1862 ), "Diligence" atChatham (also laid down 1861), "Imogene" atPortsmouth and "Success" atPembroke ; the final two were never laid down.* Five of these vessels were cancelled on
12 December 1863 - the "Tees", "Sappho", "Diligence", "Imogene" and "Success".
* A further vessel - the "Harlequin" - was cancelled16 December 1864 .
* HMS "Circassian" and HMS "Trent", both laid down as "Camelion" class sloops, were completed as theironclad sloops HMS|Enterprise|1864|6 and HMS|Research|1863|6 respectively.References
