European Parliament constituency covering most ofSouth Yorkshire inEngland .Prior to its uniform adoption of
proportional representation in 1999, theUnited Kingdom used first-past-the-post for the European elections inEngland ,Scotland andWales . The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had oneMember of the European Parliament each. When the constituency was created in 1979, it consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies of Barnsley, Dearne Valley, Doncaster, Don Valley, Penistone, Rotherham and Rother Valley. In 1984, Barnsley, Dearne Valley, Doncaster and Penistone were replaced by Barnsley Central, Barnsley East, Doncaster Central, Doncaster North and Wentworth, and the boundaries of the other constituencies changed. Boundary changes again occurred in 1994.
