It was performed at the 1889 Paris Exposition, and took the audience by storm.

The waltz has become widely known around the world. In the United States, it is most often known only as the Anniversary Song, thanks to addition of words and an arrangement attributed to Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin. It is featured in the film The Jolson Story. [From James J. Fuld's Book of World-Famous Music (5th ed., 2000, pp. 622-623): Waves of the Danube]

The melody of the Waves of the Danube is well known in Korea thanks to the famous soprano Youn Shim-Deok. It is known there as The Psalm of Death.Fact|date=October 2008

The tune was used in a film dealing with World War II titled "Valurile Dunării", and directed by Liviu Ciulei, was produced in Romania in 1959.
