- BrickFair
BrickFair is a
Lego convention held just outsideWashington DC , inTysons Corner, Virginia . Like most Lego festivals, the draw is the joy of bringing together Adult Fans Of Lego (AFOL s) to show off their creations (MOCs) and revel in others' ingenuity.Similar to many other Lego conventions, BrickFair is divided into two parts: the registrants convention and the public expo.
The event runs for three days, generally Friday through Sunday. Registrants often are permitted to start setting up their more elaborate displays on Thursday evening. BrickFair is not directly related to the Lego company. BrickFair is run by AFOL's for AFOL's. The focus is on the fans.
Registrants' Convention
Registrants pay a fee ($60 for adults) to attend. Registrants directly participate in the event by bringing their own
MOC s to show off. These Lego creations constitute the public expo portion of the event. Registrants may build robots and compete in challenges, play games, vote on awards and win awards (for their unique and creativeMOC s), etc.The event's primary objective, other than having a fun weekend, is to draw in adult fans of Lego (AFOL's) and to introduce them to the AFOL community. Adults who never got Lego out of their blood should find a welcoming community of Lego enthusiasts on the Internet and at conventions like BrickFair.
The registrants' convention is primarily an adult event, where the grown-ups get to be kids again. Children accompanying their parents are welcome.
Public Visitors
The public is welcome for a few hours on Saturday and Sunday, for a fee, to browse the expo. The public expo portion is generally a look-but-don't-touch event. Visitors may watch the Mindstorms robot battles, browse Lego vendors booths, and the like.
The public expo is open to all ages. The entire event is family-friendly.
Charitable Donations
In 2008 BrickFair raised $8,717 for children's charity. The public entrance fee finances this fundraising. The 2008 event gave this $8,717 to The SladeChild Foundation (http://www.SladeChild.org) which provides destitute children around the world with food, health, clothing and education.
