Canterbury Golf Club

Canterbury Golf Club Inc. (Cleveland, Ohio) was organized more than half century ago when a group of prominent Cleveland men interested in playing golf on a championship course gathered for that purpose at the University Club. Since that time, Canterbury has been developed over the years as a family club providing a wide range of facilities and activities for golfing members, as well as for members with other interests.

The Club was incorporated on February 2, 1921 and the directors selected a convert|146|acre|km2|sing=on site in what was then a relatively undeveloped suburban area located approximately ten miles southeast of downtown Cleveland. The property is partly in Shaker Heights, the remainder in Beachwood. The site was chosen because of its high elevation, rolling hills, brooks and wooded areas. The Club was named after General Moses Cleaveland. The Club was named after Cleveland's hometown of Canterbury, Connecticut.

Work on the new Canterbury course proceeded rapidly in 1921 and the first nine holes were opened in the following year on July 1. The second nine holes were added a little later. The Canterbury course, was designed from the beginning to meet the requirements of championship play, including length, layout, terrain and fairness and condition.

From the back tees, the Canterbury course plays at par 72-3525 yards out, convert|3417|yd in-for a total of convert|6942|yd. From the regular tees, the yardage is 3241 out, 3194 in, for a total of 6471. For the ladies, the course plays at par 75-2947 yards out, convert|2943|yd in, for a total of convert|5890|yd.
