Discovered on September 22, 1990 by E. W. Elst it was given the provisional designation "mp|1990 SK|6". It was later renamed "Brontosaurus" after Brontosaurus, a deprecated genus of dinosaur, now properly called Apatosaurus. ["MPC 47166' Minor Planet Center]
