Persecution of Dalits

The Dalits in India are often either landless labourers or small land holders. There are sometimes clashes involving more powerful and often more numerous land owing communities and the Dalits.

Here is a list of major recent cases:
* 1991: In Chundur, Andhra Pradesh, members of the dominant Reddy community (a farming caste) attacked and killed at least 8 Dalits (see Chundur Massacre).
* July 1987: In Neerukonda, Andhra Pradesh, members of the dominant Kamma community (a farming caste) threatened the local Dalit community and forced their relocation to Mangalagiri (see Neerukonda Massacre).
* Feb 12, 2003: In Kaithal, Haryana, shops run by the members of Dalit community were also allegedly looted by members of the OBC Jat community [http://www.tribuneindia.com/2003/20030213/haryana.htm#5 Six arrested for Harsola violence The Tribune, February 13, 2003,]

*4 September 2005: A Dalit woman, who won the panchayat election from Marriayaa block of Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, was forced to miss the oath-taking ceremony that as the OBC Yadav community of the village was angry at a Dalit woman becoming village head.
