Quicksand was a post-hardcore band from New York City and, retrospectively, one of the most influential rock acts of that era, and was led by former Gorilla Biscuits guitarist Walter Schreifels. The creative blueprint that Quicksand provided can still be heard in current hard rock trends.Fact|date=July 2008

The band released two widely-acclaimed albums in "Slip" and "Manic Compression" before disbanding in 1995.Fact|date=July 2008 In 1997, Quicksand reunited and embarked on a successful tour in 1998 with Deftones. Towards the end of the year, they entered Carriage House Studios in nearby Stamford, Connecticut to begin work on a follow-up to "Manic Compression", but tensions within the band caused them to split up for good.

Pre-Quicksand

Frontman/guitarist Walter Schreifels, coming from a New York Hardcore background (having been the main creative force behind the Gorilla Biscuits, as well as playing bass in Youth of Today), recruited some of the scene's more prominent musicians to complete the Quicksand line-up: Tom Capone had previously played in a later line-up of Bold, writing their more rock oriented "Looking Back" album. Alan Cage had been in Burn and Absolution, two experimental hardcore bands in their own right. Sergio Vega came from Absolution, as well. Some members had also played in Beyond, a NY band who only released a demo available at Some Records at the time.

Post-Quicksand

Since the band broke up, Walter Schreifels formed alt-rock band Rival Schools, who released one album before splitting. He currently plays in pop-rock band Walking Concert and does occasional acoustic solo performances. Guitarist Tom Capone formed Handsome with members of Murphy's Law, Iceburn and Helmet, releasing a self-titled album in 1997. He played guitar for Instruction for the majority of the time they were a band. Bassist Sergio Vega has since played bass on tour for Deftones and has also released solo material; he currently DJs around New York City. Drummer Alan Cage joined alt-rock band Seaweed and later Enemy after Quicksand's split. He has also recently been working with New Idea Society and 108.
