updated= September 27, 2008Levmoss (1965-1977) was an Irish-bred and Irish-trained
thoroughbred racehorse whose career lasted from 1967 to 1969.His defeat of
Park Top in the 1969Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was a bodyblow to those who claim that horses who win long-distance races are too slow to do anything else. He had already won theAscot Gold Cup and thePrix du Cadran that year, but he had enough pace when dropped back to one and a half miles to beat not only Park Top, but three other classic winners in Blakeney,Prince Refent andCrepellana . He had also beaten Park Top in 1968, in the Oxfordshire Stakes at Newbury, and that year also won the two-mileLeopardstown Handicap and was placed in the French St. Leger, theQueen's Vase and theLingfield Derby Trial . As a two-year-old he won once from two starts. Levmoss went to stud as a five-year-old after accumluating eight wins worth £142,226. He stood for most of his life inIreland , where he had been trained bySeamus McGrath , but moved toFrance for the 1977 season and died that year. TheIrish St. Leger winnerM-Lolshan and Prix du Cadran winnerShafaraz were his two best winners.References
