bonuses = The Prix du Cadran is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbreds which are four-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 4,000 metres (approximately 2½ miles) at Longchamp Racecourse, and it takes place annually, presently in late September or early October.

It is the most prestigious race in France for "stayers" – those horses which specialise in racing over long distances. The equivalent event in Great Britain is the Gold Cup, which is run at Royal Ascot in June.

The Prix du Cadran was first run on April 27, 1837. It was named after a clock face (French word "cadran") at the École Militaire, which is located next to the race's original venue, the Champ de Mars. It is the second oldest horse race in France which is still known by its original title, behind the Prix du Jockey Club (established in 1836). Initially the event was contested over one and a quarter laps of the Champs de Mars, a distance of 2,500 metres. The inaugural running offered a prize fund of 3,000 francs. The distance was increased to 4,000 metres in 1843, and then to 4,200 metres in 1846.

In the year of the 1848 French Revolution the Prix du Cadran was temporarily switched to Versailles. It was not run in 1850, and for the remainder of that decade the event underwent several changes. From 1851 to 1857 the distance was frequently modified, and in 1854 the race was restricted to four-year-olds only. It arrived at its present venue, Longchamp, upon the opening of the racecourse in 1857. The distance reverted to 4,200 metres in 1858.

The Prix du Cadran was cancelled in 1871 because of the Franco-Prussian War. The next significant changes were in 1913, when the distance was cut to 4,000 metres, and the race was opened to both four-year-olds and their elders. The event was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918.

During World War II the event was cancelled only once, in 1940. Thereafter, when it could not be run at Longchamp, it was transferred to Tremblay (1943–45). At this venue the distance of the race was 4,100 metres. The only subsequent cancellation came in 1968.

When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix du Cadran was classed at the highest level, Group 1. At this time the event took place in late May. In 1986 the race was opened to the participation of geldings, a group which had been previously excluded. It was moved to a new calendar position, the Saturday of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe weekend, in 1991. The "Arc" itself takes place on the first Sunday in October. The Prix du Cadran was run on the same day as the "Arc" from 2000 to 2007, but it returned to the Saturday in 2008.

Seven horses have won both the Prix du Cadran and the Ascot Gold Cup. These are Boiard, Arbar, Elpenor, Levmoss, Lassalle, Sagaro and Westerner. The fastest winning time in the Prix du Cadran over its present distance is 4m 14.1s. This was recorded by San Sebastian in 2000.
