Discovered on April 8, 1991 by E. W. Elst, it was given the provisional designation "mp|1991 GX|7". It was later renamed "Brachiosaurus" after Brachiosaurus, a large herbivorous dinosaur. ["MPC 47166" Minor Planet Center]
