2007 documentary film about the black rebellions of the 1960's. With the philosophy of nonviolence giving way to theBlack Power Movement, race riots were breaking out in Jersey City, Harlem, and Watts, Los Angeles. In 1967, black Newark taxi driver John Smith was arrested for a traffic violation and allegedly beaten and killed. "Revolution '67" details Newark's reaction to the incident. See PBS distorts Newark riot history, The Star Ledger, July 8, 2007. This review, by Robert Curvin, who was an activist and community leader in Newark at the time of the rebellion, argues that this film is full of distortion and error. It makes the point that contrary to the way the Newark struggle is depicted in the film, the Newark civil rights struggle was led by black Newarkers, and NOT by Tom Hayden and his band of mostly white college students who left Newark shortly after the violence was over. The film does a good job of making the policy connections clear between racism and societal neglect, which leads to despair and violance. But on the local history it is a total failure.
It should be noted that Robert Curvin is a former New York Times writer and scholar who has written a great deal on Newark politics and history.
