Keshavasuta

Keshavasuta

Krishnaji Keshav Damle (1866?-1905) was a famous Marathi poet, often credited as the creator of modern Marathi poetry. He wrote less than 150 poems in his entire life, under the name 'Keshav-sut' (Keshav's son). Before him, Marathi poetry was bhakti-pradhan (mostly devoted to God). And for 100-200 years before him, it was also heavily influenced by Sanskrit and use of difficult words. Keshavsut chose more mundane occurrences as his subject matter and used beautiful, simple language to express his thoughts. He was also a rebel, and exhorted his readers not to stick to old traditions for the sake of it, and discard traditions which were getting outdated.

Keshavasut (or Keshavsut, not 'soot') was born in Malgund, near Ratnagiri in western India. A beautiful memorial to the poet has been erected at his birthplace. He and his wife were victims of plague in North Karnataka in 1905.
