History
Township was built in late 1970s for housing the employees of The Fertilizer Corporation of India Limited's, Urea production plant.
Production of Urea has been suspended from 01.04.1999 due to non-availability of sufficient budgetary support from Govt. of India
Majority of employees were released on Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) in the year 2002-03. Remaining employees during the year 2003-04. Now few on the payroll of the Corporation to look after the safety and security of the properties and discharge the statutory obligations of the Company.
Layout/Facilities
Fertilizer city is a gated township with two entrances.
It has over 1200 housing units with a Shopping complex, Hospital, Bank, Recreation Center, Club, 2 Guest Houses & 3 Parks.
A Temple, Mosque, Church & Gurudwara are also in the township.
Township has Badminton, Basket ball, Cricket, Shuttle, Soccer, Tennis, Volley ball courts/grounds
Township has a movie theater in the recreation center. Movies were played on weekends during 80s
Township has intercom system.
Township has cable television network from mid 80s.
Schools
There are 3 schools
Kendriya Vidyalaya FCI (Elementary, Middle & High School) Chinmaya School (Elementary, Middle & High School) --- was closed in early 90s and DAV management took over the school after
DAV School (Elementary, Middle & High School)
ZP School (Elementary, Middle & High School up to 10th Grade only)
All schools were closed by 2003.
Transportation
APSRTC runs daily bus services to several local and Intra-State destinations including State Capital city Hyderabad. Auto-Rickshaw bay/stand is present inside the township. Auto-Rickshaws are generally used to get to Ramagundam Railway Station.
Reasons for Closure
The Factory was unique interms of
Urea andAmmonia Production wherenaphtha was Consumed. Over a period of time because of heavy expenditure on purchase of naphtha the Factory had to be shut down its production in 1999.Current Status
As the plant is permanently closed and employees were released on Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS), other than few no one resides in the township.On 11-01-08 the central government of India had announced in a press conerence that it will revive the FCI- Ramagundam with an investment of Rs 3,500 Crore. This Decision was in response to repeated pleas from the state government due to shortage in Fertilizers.The factory will be refurbished with change in machinery wherever necessary to use gas as fuel instead of naphtha. On revival FCI will provide employment to about 10,000 people
