St Giles (district board)
- St Giles (district board)
St Giles was a local government district in the metropolitan area of London from 1855 to 1900.
The district was created by the Metropolis Management Act 1855, and comprised the civil parish of St Giles in the Fields and St George Bloomsbury, Middlesex: the two parishes had been combined for civil purposes in 1774. The district was governed by the St Giles District Board of Works, which consisted of elected vestrymen.
St Giles District was originally in the area of responsibility of the Metropolitan Board of Works, to which body it nominated one member. [Metropolis Management Act 1855 (18 & 19 Vict. c.120)] In 1889 the area of the MBW was constituted the County of London, and the District Board became a local authority under the London County Council.
The district was abolished in 1900 by the London Government Act 1899, which divided the County of London into twenty-eight metropolitan boroughs. The area administered by the board became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Holborn [London Government Act 1899 (62 & 63 Vict. c.14)]
