Thoroughbred filly racehorse known for her toughness who went on racing until the age of six, travelling around the world always taking on the very best. Bred inKentucky , she was a descendant through both her sire and dam of the great runner and sire,Nearco . She was consigned to the 1983Keeneland summer yearling sale where she was purchased for US$2.15 million by an agent forAlan Clore .Triptych ran 41 times; of those, 12 were
Pattern races , including nineGroup 1 events. She was placed another 19 times, all but one of them in Group 1 races, and her worldwide earnings amounted to more than £1,500,5000. Her first big win came in the 1984Prix Marcel Boussac , when she was trained byDavid Smaga inFrance , but she moved to David O'Brien inIreland for her second season when she became the first filly to win theIrish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh and was runner-up in theEpsom Oaks toOh So Sharp .At age four in 1986, Triptych won the
Champion Stakes andLa Coupe , by which time she had joinedPatrick Biancone . She was placed in theKing George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes ,Eclipse Stakes andPrix de l'Arc de Triomphe . In 1987 she excelled herself, winning theCoronation Cup (which she also won in 1988),Prix Ganay ,Champion Stakes (both English and Irish versions) and theInternational Stakes . She was sent to race in the United States where she made one start atChurchill Downs inKentucky and was then retired to broodmare duty on November 7, 1988.Sent to stud in 1989, she died as a result of a freak accident when she ran into a stud farm vehicle. She was in foal to
