Ambilight

Ambilight

Ambilight, which is short for Ambient Lighting Technology, is a feature invented by Philips Electronics, generating light effects around the TV that correspond to the video content. The effect, the company claims, is a larger virtual screen and a more immersive viewing experience. In addition, Philips claims that it reduces viewer eye strain.

Ambilight versions:
* Ambilight "mono" (aka Ambilight 1): the same light effect is applied left and right of the screen, no light is applied to the top and bottom of the screen
* Ambilight "stereo" (aka Ambilight 2): the left and right side of the screen have separate light effects, no light is applied to the top and bottom of the screen
* Ambilight "surround" (aka Ambilight 3): the left, right and top side of the sceen have separate light effects, no light is applied to the bottom of the screen
* Ambilight "full surround" (aka Ambilight 4): all sides of the screen have separate light effects
*Ambilight Spectra: A successor of the Ambilight technology debuted in Philips Aurea TVs, it includes an Active Frame consisting of 126 LEDs that light up in different colours within the same border. As part of the advertising campaign, the Seduction by Light site used Wong Kar Wai's "There's Only One Sun" film to demonstrate the technology.
*amBX: a version of Ambilight designed for PC gaming. Similarly, light effects occur resulting from in-game events and actions.
