Peel Engineering Company

Peel Engineering Company

The Peel Engineering Company was a manufacturing company based on the Isle of Man that primarily made fiberglass boats as well as fairings for motorcycles. They were also responsible for the Peel Manxcar, Peel P50, and Peel Trident microcars, in addition to the Peel Viking Sport and prototype GRP Minis for BMC. These models constitute the only automobiles manufactured on the Isle of Man; the company halted their manufacture in 1969 (though some newer replicas exist). A limited-run Peel Manxkart go-kart was also produced.

West Marine Ltd.

Started by Designer, Inventor and Engineer Cyril Cannell in the early 50s making Microcars, Karts, GRP Boats and fibreglass products, West Marine was located in the boat yard in the River Neb at the top of Peel harbour, in the Isle of Man. It handled boat fabrication for Peel Engineering.

They made several 18 foot Peel Inshoreman boats called a 'Peel Pig'. Which where simple small fishing boats with an outboard engine and a small cuddy forward, These where made at a factory in Jurby at the North of the Isle of Man. There was also a 25 foot Midshoreman which was more suited to the Irish sea. It had an inboard diesel engine with Z drive. A forward 2 Berth cabin, a 2 berth mid cabin which doubled up as a galley/saloon, and a separate head. The Wheel house was open to the rear straight onto the deck. There are only supposed to be three of these ever made, to qualify for a Government business grant, which was never received. It was designed by Dr. E. C. B. Corlett. Also there was a 33 or 35 foot Offshoreman, which was a motor sailer with possibly only one or two built. In addition to these there was a small Row Boat / tender with possible sailing capabilities, this is believed to be a GRP copy of an old boat that was lying around the yard at the time.
