- Theatre junction
Theatre Junction is a contemporary theatre company based in
Calgary, Alberta .Theatre Junction was founded in 1991 by Mark Lawes. In its original inception, Theatre Junction performed modern work as part of a classical, text based program. Their performances have included a wide array of works from many Canadian playwrights including, Judith Thompson, John Murrell Dominic Champagne and Sharon Pollock.
Recently, the company has shifted its mandate and now maintains a resident company of artists from different disciplines who work together to create contemporary pieces. Alongside the work presented by their resident company of artists, the company also curates a season of contemporary work from local, national and international artists of varying disciplines.
In 2006, the Theatre Junction Society raised $12 million to purchase and restore The GRAND, a venue built in 1912, which operated as Calgary's original "culturehouse". Theatre Junction, operating out of The Grand, presents contemporary theatre, dance and music from a local, national and international perspective. The GRAND also functions as a rental space, allowing performers such as Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, or internationally renowned choreographer Philippe Decoufle to present their work in this newly designed space.
