Founded by Dr.
Eugene Garfield , and with an advisory board that includesCraig Venter and Nobel LaureateJoshua Lederberg , the mission of The Scientist is to provide print and online coverage of the latest developments in life sciences research, technology and business. The target audience is active researchers that are interested in maintaining a broad view of the life sciences by reading articles that are current, concise, and entertaining. It keeps readers up-to-date with research advances, business, science in culture, technology developments and career advice.Subject matter covered by the journal is wide and varied, and includes:

Best Places to Work
Since
2003 , The Scientist has conducted Best Places to Work surveys: one for postdoctoral researchers in all sectors, one for all life scientists working in industry, and one for all life scientists working in academia. These surveys aim to find what aspects of the workplace are most important for job satisfaction, and which institutions measure up to those standards. Throughout the year The Scientist publishes overviews of these surveys' results, highlighting the top ranking institutions in each.Life Science Industry Awards
The Life Science Industry Awards recognize life science suppliers with the "best-in-class" product and services as well as customer communications and support. The winners of these awards are determined by the industry’s own customers - scientists in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, in government and academia. The Life Science Industry Awards are awarded annually by The Scientist magazine.
Laboratory Web Site and Video Awards
Beginning in
2007 , The Scientist began recognizing laboratories who were best using the internet to further science. Labs usingYouTube ,Wikipedia , JoVE, and other tools to best collaborate, communicate and research were nominated by readers around the world.The Scientist Online
The Scientist also offers a comprehensive website which complements the print version by offering up-to-the-minute life science news, interactive multimedia features, and several channels to stimulate dialogue and involvement among its readership.
