He played during two seasons at the major league level for the St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins, and in Japan for the Yokohama BayStars.
Gulan was drafted by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 1992 amateur draft after playing collegiately at Kent State University from 1990-1992. He played his first professional season with their Class A (Short Season) Hamilton Redbirds in 1992, and his last season with the White Sox's Rookie league team, the Bristol White Sox, in 2004.
