Cole started as an intern to State Senator
George W. Della, Jr. when he was 19 and then served as a legislative aide to former State Senator Walter Baker for 2 sessions (1995 and 1996). From there, he served as special assistant to U.S. RepresentativeElijah E. Cummings (MD-07) from 1996-2003.While working for Cummings, Cole was elected to the Democratic State Central Committee in District 47A at the age of 25. He was subsequently elected by that group to serve as its Sergeant of Arms. Months later, Cole was selected, over 12 other candidates, by the Baltimore City Central Committee to fill the seat vacated by Del. Timothy Murphy when Murphy was elevated to District Court bench. Parris N. Glendening approved the selection and appointed Cole to theMaryland House of Delegates in February 1999.By 2002, Baltimore City lost an entire legislative district, the 47th, where Bill Cole was a delegate. He was redistricted into the 46th district with three long-time incumbents, he finished fourth in that year's primary and lost his chance to return to the Maryland House. Cole was elected to City Council in 2007, where he is Vice-chair of the Taxation, Finance, & Economic Development Committee, chairman of the Community Development Subcommittee, member of the Land Use & Transportation committee, and member of the Education committee.
He is an associate vice president and adjunct professor at the

Born in Maryland, Cole has lived in downtown Baltimore for 21 years. After receiving a
B.A. in Government and Politics from theUniversity of Maryland, College Park in 1994 and aM.A. in Legal and Ethical Studies from theUniversity of Baltimore in 1996, Cole was admitted to Alpha Epsilon Lambda, the national honor society for graduate and professional students.Cole, his wife, Michelle and their three children live in the Otterbein neighborhood where he served as president of the community association from 2003-2007. Community service
Cole serves as a member of the Board of Midtown Community Benefits District, the Downtown Partnership, the Flag House & Star-Spangled Banner Museum, and the Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics at the University of Baltimore. He is past president of the
Otterbein Community Association, 2003 - 2007 and a previous board member of the Patriots of Fort McHenry. He is a coach with the South Baltimore Youth Soccer League and is active in a number of other boards and commissions.References and Notes
