Mhindi

Mhindi or Muindi is a word meaning "Indian" or broadly "South Asian" in Swahili, a language of East Africa. This term is used significantly in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania which may be considered the birth place of Swahili.

East Africa has a long history of trade relations with India, mainly because of Arab traders. Large numbers of Indians settled in East Africa in Colonial times. They were brought by the British to work on the Uganda Railway or to farm the sugar cane fields. Today a fairly large number of ethnic Indians still live in East Africa and are one of the strongest groups economically.
