Its seat is the village of Baćkowice, which lies approximately convert|14|km|mi|0 west of Opatów and convert|45|km|mi|0|abbr=on east of the regional capital Kielce.

The gmina covers an area of convert|96.25|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 5,177.

The gmina contains part of the protected area called Jeleniowska Landscape Park.
