IThemba

iThemba AIDS Foundation is a charity that works to bring hope to people affected by HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. It partners with local people in Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. The partner projects are usually run by churches and faith-based organisations and they are designed to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of local communities.

iThemba AIDS Foundation was founded in 2002 and is a UK registered charity and a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organisation in the US.

Programmes

HIV/AIDS has been described as the greatest public health disaster in recorded history. More than 42 million people worldwide have been infected. By the end of this decade the figure will have more than doubled to 87 million people. 22.5 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are HIV-infected. Over 5,700 people die everyday because of AIDS-related illnesses – more than 4,000 of them live in Africa. (Source: UNAIDS)

iThemba partners with projects working in the following areas:
* Orphan care - community-based solutions for caring for orphans and vulnerable children
* Supporting the rollout of antiretroviral therapy - ensuring that patients are supported to take their medication correctly
* Prevention and education to help stop the spread HIV/AIDS
* Counselling and testing in local communities
* Microfinance initiatives to help families provide for their own needs
* Home-based care of HIV-positive people

Engagehivaids.com

iThemba also runs an online community called engagehivaids.com, a partnership with Onehundredhours, which works to educate and mobilise people to respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
