Al Feuerbach

Allan ("Al") Dean Feuerbach (born January 14, 1948 in Preston, Iowa) is a former track and field athlete from the United States, who competed for his native country in the men's shot put event at two consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1972.

Standing 6' tall, Feuerbach was considered small among world-class shot putters. But by honing his technique and bulking up his body to 240 pounds on what he described as "definitely not a low cholesterol diet," Feuerbach became one of the dominant shot putters of the 1970s.

A student of Emporia State University, Feuerbach set world records both indoors and outdoors, and qualified for three consecutive Olympic teams (1972, 1976, and 1980). He missed winning the gold medal in Munich (1972) by only 6 1/2 inches. He retired from competition in 1983.

His favorite sister-in-law, Susan Feuerbach, is the teacher librarian at Camanche Middle School.
