Urban zones of New Zealand

Urban zones of New Zealand

In New Zealand an urban zone is a subdivision of an urban area. As of 2008 there are four urban areas in New Zealand that have been divided into zones. All urban zones are in the North Island.

Auckland Urban Area

The Auckland Urban Area is divided into four urban zones: Northern Auckland, Western Auckland, Central Auckland and Southern Auckland. The Northern Auckland Zone comprises all of North Shore City and the Hibiscus Coast, an area in Rodney District including Orewa and the Whangaparoa Peninsula. The Western Auckland urban zone is mostly situated within Waitakere City, although some semi-rural tracts of land in the vicinity of Kumeu in Rodney District are also considered part of western Auckland. The Central Auckland Urban Zone is the mainland part of Auckland City, and excludes the Hauraki Gulf islands. The Souther Auckland Urban Zone consists of the urban part of Manukau City (the east of the city), Papakura District, and parts of Franklin District (Runciman and Whangapouri Creek).

Hamilton Urban Area

The Hamilton Urban Area is divided into three urban zones. The largest urban zone in Hamilton Urban Zone, which comprises Hamilton City and neighbouring parts of Waikato and Waipa districts. The other two urban zones are centred on the towns of Cambridge and Te Awamutu and bear their names. These urban zones are both entirely within Waipa district.

Napier-Hastings Urban Area

"Main article: Napier-Hastings"

The twin cities of Napier and Hastings in the Hawkes Bay comprise a single urban area divided into two urban zones. Napier Urban Zone consists of Napier City, plus areas to the north and south within Hastings District. Hastings Urban Zone is entirely within Hastings District.

Wellington Urban Area

Wellington is divided into four urban zones, bearing the names of the four cities that Wellington straddles: Porirua, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and Wellington. Each urban zone is entirely within the city of the same name. The rural areas around Wellington are excluded from each urban zone so each urban zone is significantly smaller in area than its associated city council area.
