Its seat is the town of Blachownia, which lies approximately convert|11|km|mi|0 west of Częstochowa and convert|60|km|mi|0|abbr=on north of the regional capital Katowice.

The gmina covers an area of convert|67.21|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 13,329 (out of which the population of Blachownia amounts to 9,863, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 3,466).
