"Gainsborough" was a 40-gun
fourth rate sclass|Elizabeth|frigate|0 frigate of the EnglishRoyal Navy , originally built for the navy of theCommonwealth of England by Thomas Taylor atPitch House (Wapping), and launched in 1653. She was named for the Parliamentarian victory at theBattle of Gainsborough in 1643.After
the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, she was renamed HMS "Swallow". By 1677 her armament had been increased to 48 guns. "Swallow" was wrecked in 1692.Notes
