The gmina covers an area of convert|197.44|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 23,568 (out of which the population of Bytów amounts to 16,715, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 6,853).

The gmina contains part of the protected area called Słupia Valley Landscape Park.
