1947 VFL Grand Final

1947 VFL Grand Final

The 1947 VFL Grand Final took place on September 27, 1947 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground between VFL clubs Carlton and Essendon. A crowd of 85815 people saw Carlton win the match by a single point, 86 to 85, the first grand final to be decided by such a margin since Fitzroy v Essendon in 1898. Essendon were attempting to become back to back premiers and had the lead in the dying seconds before Ken Baxter won the ball from a boundary throw in and gave the ball to Carlton half forward flanker Fred Stafford who snapped the winning goal off his left boot.

Trivia

The scoreline of this game, Carlton 13.8 (86) d Essendon 11.19 (85), is coincidentally similar to the scoreline of the famous 1999 Preliminary Final. Each team scored exactly three goals more in that game than in this one, the final score reading Carlton 16.8 (104) d Essendon 14.19 (103).
