- Emerald Hill Children's Home, Zimbabwe
Emerald Hill Children's Home is a privately run home for orphans and other children in difficult circumstances, located at the summit of Emerald Hill, Harare, Zimbabwe. It is registered as a charity (number W.O. 183 / 68) and operates as a non-governmental organization (NGO). Its mission is to provide homely shelter for children in need of care and to develop each child to full potential.
Since 1914, hundreds of Zimbabwe's most vulnerable children have found safe haven at Emerald Hill Children's Home. Today the Home provides for the physical and emotional well-being of about 90 children, all of whom have been removed from unsafe homes, orphaned or abandoned.
Many of the children have experienced rejection and loss in their past. Some currently face a difficult struggle against HIV/AIDS. The youngest children come to Emerald Hill Children's Home at the age of 3. The girls stay until they have some job training and are self-sufficient, while the boys move to St. Joseph's Home after completing primary school. Apart from safety and love, the Home provides medical care, school tuition, clothing, food and shelter for these deserving young people.
The Dominican Sisters run the home and have the difficult task of providing all these services under extremely challenging economic circumstances.
