The "Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax" is an Ancient Greek periplus, dating from 4th or
3rd century BC. The name Scylax is thought to be an appeal to authority: Herodotus (4.44) mentions a Scylax of Caryanda, a Carian navigator who explored the coast of the Indian Ocean on behalf of the Persians.
Pseudo-Scylax takes a clockwise circumnavigation of the Mediterranean and Black Sea, starting in Iberia and ending in West Africa, beyond the Pillars of Hercules. The African section is clearly sourced from the "Periplus" of Hanno the Navigator.
There remains one manuscript, that of Pithou, which is the original of those according to which the first edition was published.
"The Periplus of Scylax was first published by Hoeschel, with other minor Greek geographers, Augsburg, 1600, 8vo. ; next by Is. Vossius, Amsterdam, 1639, 4to. ; subsequently by Hudson, in his " Geographi Graeci Minores," and in the reprint of the same work by Gail, Paris, 1826 ; and last of all by R. H. Klausen, attached to his fragments of Hecataeus, Berlin, 1831."
